There's a song in the Musical Sunday In the Park With George called "Finishing the Hat" which is about how artists work endlessly towards the completion of something that never quite really feels complete, but which does gives a sense of accomplishment, and in the process ignore the things that might also require attention. It's a sort of triumphant song, which nevertheless acknowledges the cost of such undeviating focus.
The whole thing has gotten some use already, although I remain skeptical that any of the plants are actually surviving much less thriving, but time will tell. I have yet to get another basil plant to replace the one that died, but I will. In the meantime I water everything regularly, keep the greenhouse closed at night and on cold days, and look forward very much to spring. The Frost Kiss Hellebore has at last opened, the daffs are going to bloom soon, and the Winter Jasmine is blossoming more everyday. Even better; Spring Break is just around the corner!
And when the woman that you wanted goes,
You can say to yourself, "Well, I give what I give."
But the woman who won't wait for you knows
That, however you live,
There's a part of you always standing by,
Mapping out the sky,
Finishing a hat...
Starting on a hat..
Finishing a hat...
Look, I made a hat...
Where there never was a hat.
At this point the greenhouse can be considered finished, although I doubt it will ever feel really done. I like projects like that, where there are always more ways to improve it. I'm always looking for ways to improve things. As mentioned earlier the potting bench was completed and installed in the greenhouse along the short side closest to the house, allowing for the long side to catch more light. I had leveled off the flooring and put down more weed barrier over it, so more paving stones and gravel were needed. Once those went in the structure really started to look done and I am super pleased with the end result there even if there is a slight divot in the center developing. Oh well, more drainage. The bamboo shelving unit for the seed trays did measure out to be just about perfect for the remaining long area without blocking too much of the potting bench so it was duly put together and installed as well. Happily it was waaaaay easier to get into the greenhouse than the potting bench.
