Anyone who knows me well knows that I really love being productive, and moving a multi-faceted project along by inches every day is a pretty satisfying way to live my life. This is highly likely to be one of the reasons that I love being a Costume Designer; at the end of the day something is more real, more done, closer to finished...and then you start all over again with something new.
Well, this morning before work I installed a seedling bed in the greenhouse. I was at the hardware store the other day, having exhausted my search at the nursery for gravel and agricultural grit and pavers that weren't sold by the pallet, and I came across not only pavers sold per slab, but also this lovely bendy rubber edging that looks like stone. I knew I wanted to put in edging around the shade bed, and I knew I wanted to have a seedling bed in the greenhouse for tender little sprouts that couldn't be potted up yet but which didn't need to be in seed trays. Hence this just made sense. Now I have about 1.5' x 4.25' of space in which to grown on the baby plants. In my excitement I neglected to measure the sides for accuracy and evenness and I'm sure that will bother me a bit in the future, but I can live with it for now.
I've also been digging up and re-appropriating lots of organically-shaped stones from the property, some of which are down in the culvert by the road. These are being gradually put together rather like a giant jigsaw puzzle to form a path from the deck to the greenhouse door. The intended effect will be something like the photo to the right when finished. I do want to have some moss or maybe fragrant ground-cover between the stones, but just getting them into place and level is the priority right now. I see that as a project for a few weeks from now, since the next couple of weekends will be pretty busy with the current show.
The gravel that I eventually broke down and ordered is in, but I will definitely need more to cover the floor of the greenhouse, which now also has six stone pavers so I have somewhere stable to stand and work, but will likely need at least two more. I'm holding off on acquiring the last two until after the plant shelves and potting bench are in and installed, which is due to happen tomorrow. After that I'll have the ability to really work in the greenhouse, which of course makes me ecstatic, especially as it is about time to start the seed trays for this year and I've been putting it off for lack of proper facilities.
