There's this saying about the English, "Tedious in safety, marvelous in adversity." I can't tell if I'm channeling my English heritage, or just not taking this whole viral quarantine thing as seriously as I should. Possibly it's because I'm under 60 years of age, or maybe it's because I live rather remote from most of the civilized world as it is. This is not to say that I doubt the veracity of the news media, as some people do; I'm actually rather aghast at the vitriol directed towards "the media" and the lack of differentiation people seem to make regarding the news and the more sensational elements of media. That being said, do we really need to stockpile toilet paper and dry goods?
I so happen to have had plenty of both prior to my school being effectively shut down. I went shopping Saturday for my normal weekly grocery run, and things seemed fine. The few places I've been in town don't appear to have turned into wastelands. Today, however, I went an hour away to the nearest big shopping center to get some work supplies and return something I didn't end up needing for the house. Deserted. A line around the building for the coffee drive-through, but the fabric store and the Target were the most empty I've ever seen them. I grant you that a Wednesday morning is not my normal shopping time, but it was close to lunchtime by the time I got there.
Our final production of the semester was cancelled, or more accurately suspended until next season, which does open up some time for me; but as there's no rest for the wicked I still have a show this May/June to work on and that panel project for the library- so far. We'll see what happens.
